The Print Foundry

The Print Foundry Review

The Print Foundry are one of the sponsors of The NPS so after a factory visit by a couple of our staff in January we asked Stephen Waller (our main product reviewer) to pen a few words about their products.

The Print Foundry are making a name for themselves when it comes to mounting and framing of photographers images, in a relatively short time they have built a reputation for producing fine quality products at a price point that offers great value for money.

Its all too easy to be drawn by price when it comes to producing your art, but when the finish says everything about your business you need a company who are going to take as much care with the end product as you would.

Based in Croydon, London, the business specialises in producing fine art prints, they also mount onto acrylic or aluminium, produce canvas’ and frame using a number of contemporary mouldings

Having used the Print Foundry since their early days I was well aware on the standard of their work and was more than happy to take a look at some of their more recent products.

Within a few days of sending my images I was greeted by the sight of a delivery driver bringing some parcels to my door. As is usual with Print Foundry products these were packed well…VERY WELL packed. A few careful minutes with a sharp Stanley knife and the corrugated cardboard and packing tape was off, leaving a number of sharp white inner boxes. Inside these there was more packaging around the products, by way of protective corners and foam wrap. You would have to try hard to damage any of these in transit!

Personally I love images mounted or printed onto acrylic, so it was predictable that it was the two acrylic products that caught my eye first.

The Tray Framed HD Acrylic is essentially a 5mm acrylic sheet which has the image bonded to the reverse. A thin sheet of foamex is then affixed to the back, before everything is mounted within a modern sharp frame.

It all looks very nice and the acrylic appears to be floating in air within the frame. On the back a single serrated hanger is more than enough to keep the acrylic on a screw on the wall.

  • Facemounted with the highest grade fine art adhesive
  • Hi-definition 12 colour printing
  • Certified for 100+ years

Next up was the HD Acrylic Orb. These are circular pieces of acrylic with a diamond and flame polished edge. Again the print is bonded to the back of the acrylic and protected with a thin layer of Foamex. Round the back the example I received was sporting an aluminium sub-frame with a single screw hanger (wooden sub-frames are standard) and when hung the orb gives the impression of floating from the wall.

HD Acrylic Orbs are available in 10, 20, 30, 40 inch stock sizes, with custom sizes an option. With the right image they make a unique and striking piece of art.

For those who don’t like the really shiny appearance of acrylic an Aluminium Mounted Print may be the answer. These have, as the name suggests, your print mounted onto a 2mm thick piece of aluminium, which is then sealed with either a matte or gloss film. The one I received had a matte finish and although on initial inspection (in my opinion) it didn’t stand up against the acrylic pieces, I have warmed to it and it does look very nice floating on the wall. The flat matte finish does of course avoid any reflections so this could be seen as a benefit for some.

Specification

  • 2mm Solid aluminium sheet Sealed with a matte or ultra gloss film
  • Brushed edges for a cleaner finish
  • Supplied with white wooden subframe (Solid aluminium subframe optional)
  • Hi-definition 12 colour printing
  • Supplied in a white presentation box
  • Bespoke sizes up to 3m in length Standard production

Prints on canvas have been about for some time but The Print Foundry have taken things a stage further by adding the option of frames around the outside to freshen up the look. The Deep Framed Canvas is a 450gsm non yellowing canvas set within 45mm deep exhibition pro stretcher bars. These are available in black or white and give the canvas an all together more substantial look. Its kind of the best of both worlds in that it is a canvas but also a framed piece of art.

Specification

  • 450gsm Fine art canvas OBA Free (No yellowing over time)
  • 45mm deep exhibition pro stretcher bars Double tensioning wedges
  • Deep Frame in smooth black or white
  • Hi-definition 12 colour giclée printing
  • Fine art UV varnish for added protection and light fastness (no need for glass)
  • Archival certified for 100+ years
  • Professionally framed and finished Supplied in a white presentation box
  • Bespoke sizes up to 2m in length

Another idea on the framed canvas theme is the Classic Framed Canvas. This is a printed canvas bonded onto a flat art board and then framed in a matte finished black or white frame. With the canvas on a flat board there is no chance of the canvas stretching with time and for some this may be considered an advantage.

Specification

  • 450gsm Fine art canvas OBA Free (No yellowing over time)
  • Bonded onto non acidic art board.
  • 12 colour giclée printing Fine art UV varnish for added protection and light fastness (no need for glass) Archival certified for 100+ years
  • Professionally framed and finished Supplied in a white presentation box
  • Bespoke sizes up to 2m in length

All these display options offer something that is just that bit different to what’s available elsewhere and could really lift your images to the next level.
