Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD (A046) FE Official UK Price

From Tamron: Tamron’s NEW 17-28mm F/2.8 Di III RXD lens for Sony FE, full frame mirrorless cameras. An extremely compact and lightweight, fast aperture, ultra wide-angle zoom.

Tamron’s new 17-28mm F/2.8 Di III RXD (Model A046) lens for Sony Mirrorless full frame cameras achieves all of the benefits of a fast F/2.8 aperture in an ultra wide-angle zoom lens, but with an amazingly compact and lightweight design at just 420g and with an overall length of just 99mm. This compact size provides excellent balance and is easy to carry especially with no barrel extension whilst focusing or zooming, making it great for travelling.

The 17-28mm RXD offers a large F/2.8 aperture throughout the entire zoom range and delivers edge-to-edge high-resolution and contrast. The combination of ultra wide-angle focal length, large constant F/2.8 aperture and a Minimum Object Distance (MOD) of 19cm at the wide-angle end encourages richly expressive and creative photography in a multitude of scenarios.

The new 17-28mm zoom’s AF drive system is powered by the RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) AF motor unit that enables it to deliver high-speed, high-precision and superbly quiet operation, making it suitable for shooting virtually noise-free video as well as still photographs.

In addition, Moisture-Resistant Construction and a hydrophobic Fluorine Coating repels fingerprints and dirt. The 17-28mm RXD is also fully compatible with various camera-specific features including Fast Hybrid AF and Eye AF.

High performance optical construction & design combined with exceptional portability, make the 17-28mm zoom the ideal fit for your mirrorless camera body & ideal for professional or enthusiast use.

1. Companion model to the compact, popular Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III RXD (Model A036) zoom

Sharing the same development concept as the 28-75mm RXD that launched in May 2018, the 17-28mm zoom was designed with the top priority of high optical performance in a form factor that is light and compact. Tamron engineers have achieved an unrivalled small size (99mm) and light weight (420g) for a zoom range of 17-28mm. The overall length does not change when zoomed or during focus, thereby creating stable, well balanced operation and excellent mobility. In addition, the 17-28mm RXD features a filter diameter of just 67mm, very small for an ultra wide-angle zoom lens. It has the same filter size as its sister lens the 28-75mm RXD allowing the use of the same lens cap and filters. The two zooms together create an extremely compact system that covers 17 to 75mm and weighs less than 1kg.

2. Superb high resolution performance

The 17-28mm zoom’s optical design consists of 13 lenses in 11 groups, including three aspherical lens elements, two LD (Low Dispersion) lens elements and one XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) lens element that has properties close to those of fluorite. Together they efficiently suppress chromatic and other aberrations. Additionally, Tamron’s legendary BBAR (Broad-Brand Anti-Reflection) Coating effectively reduces ghosting and flare. Leveraging camera functions*, it provides excellent optical performance matching the latest high resolution image sensors from edge-to-edge throughout the entire zoom range. The combination of compact size and light weight plus high resolution performance lets users capture a wide variety of genre including landscapes, architecture and street photography.

*When shooting with the camera’s lens correction function enabled.

3. Extreme close-up capability enables versatile creative expression with ultra wide-angle zoom

The 17-28mm zoom focuses close. The MOD at the 17mm wide position is 0.19m / 7.5 in (the same as the 28-75mm RXD) and the maximum magnification ratio is 1:5.2. At the 28mm end, it achieves the maximum magnification ratio of 1:6 while reaching the MOD of 26cm. This remarkable performance allows users to create great wide-angle compositions that emphasize perspective.

4. The RXD stepping motor unit is exceptionally quiet

The AF drive incorporates a sensor that accurately detects the position of the lens while the RXD motor unit delivers optimized AF control. This achieves very fast and accurate autofocus operation, allowing users to maintain pin-sharp focus on continually moving subjects or when filming video. The exceedingly quiet operation is an important advantage because it virtually eliminates extraneous sounds during video recording. In addition, the compact configuration of the RXD AF drive system contributes to the unprecedented size and weight reduction.

5. Moisture-Resistant Construction and Fluorine Coating

Environmental seals are located at the lens mount area and other critical locations to prevent infiltration of moisture and/or rain drops and afford Moisture-Resistant construction. This feature provides an additional layer of protection when shooting outdoors under adverse weather conditions. Also, the front surface of the lens element is coated with a protective fluorine compound that has excellent water- and oil-repellant qualities. The lens surface is easier to wipe clean and is less vulnerable to the damaging effects of dirt, moisture or oily fingerprints, allowing for much easier maintenance.

6. Consistent design and operation throughout all Tamron lenses for full-frame mirrorless cameras

Similar to the 28-75mm (Model A036), the 17-28mm (Model A046) has a zoom ring at the front and a focus ring at the rear. Zooming, focusing and other functions are identical in this series to ensure consistent operation. The design is not only beautiful, it is functional as well and features an outer housing hugging the smooth contours of the lens body, deftly worked Luminous Gold brand ring and the precise, rigid metal lens mount. The Luminous Gold brand ring solidifies the characteristic look of a Tamron-branded lens whether on its own or attached to a camera body.

7. Versatile, exciting combination when paired with the 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III RXD (Model A036)

Two high-performance partners, the 17-28mm combined with the 28-75mm, cover a broad range from 17mm ultra wide-angle to 75mm medium telephoto, whilst maintaining a fast open aperture of F/2.8. The total weight of the two lenses is only 970g. This compact but potent combo makes the most of the mobility of mirrorless cameras. In addition, both models have a filter diameter of 67mm, so the same filters such as PL (Polarizer) and ND (Neutral Density) may be used with both models.

8. Compatible with main camera-specific features and functions

Tamron’s new 17-28mm zoom is compatible with many advanced features as follows:

  • Fast Hybrid AF
  • Eye AF
  • Direct Manual Focus (DMF)
  • In-camera lens correction (shading, chromatic aberration, distortion)
  • Camera-based lens unit firmware updates

Sony Announces FE 600mm, FE 200-600mm Super Telephoto Lenses

FE 600mm F/4 GM OSS

Sony today announced another impressive addition to its flagship full-frame G Master series lens line-up, the new FE 600mm F4 GM OSS super-telephoto prime lens (model SEL600F40GM).

Sony’s longest reaching prime lens, the new 600mm includes many of the company’s most advanced optical and mechanical technologies, producing exceptional image quality with extraordinary focusing speed and precision. The lightest in its class, weighing in at only approx. 3040g, the FE 600mm F4 GM OSS features an extremely balanced design to ensure the best possible shooting experience. Along with the acclaimed FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS lens, the new 600mm gives professional sports, wildlife and news photographers more options for capturing subjects at great distances with extreme accuracy and detail.

Fast, Precise and Quiet Autofocus

To take best advantage of the highly evolved autofocus systems of Sony’s latest full-frame E-mount cameras, the new FE 600mm F4 GM OSS lens features two XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors that drive the lens’ focus group to provide fast, precise AF and reliable subject tracking. These motors are supported by specially developed motion algorithms to minimise lag and instability, as well as to control noise levels, resulting in exceptionally quick, accurate and quiet autofocus performance, allowing the lens to capture dynamic, fast moving athletes or wildlife with ease.

Superb G Master Image Quality and Bokeh

As a member of Sony’s flagship G Master series lenses, this new large aperture super-telephoto prime lens features an incredible level of image quality and detail, with outstanding contrast and resolution maintained all the way to the corners of the image. The unique optical design includes a large XA (extreme aspherical) and an ED (extra-low dispersion) element that effectively suppresses all common telephoto lens aberrations, plus three fluorite elements that help to minimise chromatic aberration and suppress any amount of colour bleeding. Sony’s latest bokeh simulation technologies and XA element are also utilised to control spherical aberration and help achieve exquisite bokeh.

The lens also features an 11-blade circular aperture mechanism that contributes to the high quality of bokeh in images and has been coated with Sony’s original Nano AR coating to suppress any unwanted reflections, glare, or ghosting in images.

The new FE 600mm F4 GM OSS is compatible with Sony’s 1.4x and 2.0x E-mount teleconverters, producing outstanding imaging performance at extended focal lengths while maintaining fast, precise AF performance.

Lightweight, Balanced Design

Weighing in at only approx. 3040g, the new super-telephoto prime lens is the lightest in its class, providing a level of portability and manoeuvrability that has never been achieved before in a lens of its style. Based on technology from the acclaimed FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS lens, the lightweight design of the new 600mm lens is achieved through the usage of three fluorite elements, with a reduced number of elements deployed at the front of the barrel. Magnesium alloy is also used throughout the lens to help minimise weight and bulk.

Also inherited from FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS, the new 600mm lens features a lens design that is not front-heavy, reducing moment of inertia that resists rotation, ensuring quicker, more precise panning when shooting handheld or on a monopod.

Durability, Reliability and Control

To withstand the harsh conditions of sporting events and wildlife photography, Sony’s new FE 600mm F4 GM OSS is built with a durable magnesium alloy and a strong, lightweight carbon fibre hood. The lens is also dust and moisture resistant, and its front element is coated with fluorine to resist dirt and fingerprints.

There is also an ample number of hard controls on the lens, including customisable focus-hold buttons in four different locations on the lens barrel, which can be programmed for control of features, if desired. There is also a ‘Full-Time DMF’ switch to immediately engage manual focus at any point, and a focus ring that features Linear Response MF for fine, responsive manual focus.

Additionally, the new lens includes built-in optical stabilisation for dynamic action and three different ‘Mode’ settings, including a Mode 3 setting with an advanced algorithm that ensures easier framing when following moving subjects. It also features a function ring with selectable ‘Preset’ and ‘Function’ settings, and a drop-in filter slot that accepts ø 40.5mm ND and other filter types, as well as the optional VF-DCPL1 Drop-in Circular Polarising Filter. The VF-DCPL1 filter can be rotated to achieve the desired polarisation while installed in the lens.

However, after an outcry from fans who didn’t want to see sales of the film end, Fujifilm has announced that they have created a new version of the black & white film after researching ways they can substitute the old raw materials that were hard to obtain and improving the manufacturing process.

NEO PAN 100 ACROS II black & white film is an ultra-high-quality black & white film with ISO100 sensitivity and what Fujifilm is describing as having fine grain, three-dimensional tone reproduction and excellent sharpness.

Fujifilm also says that it is suitable for shooting in a wide range of fields, such as product photography, architecture photography, long-exposures and night photography.

The NEO PAN 100 ACROS II black & white film will be available in 120mm and 35mm formats but there’s no news on when they’ll actually arrive in stores.
